The Power of Introspection
The Hidden Key to Personal Growth
When was the last time you took inventory of your life? It’s been a while? Let’s talk.
We live in a world that demands a lot out of us, especially in Western culture. It seems that everything and everybody is moving just as fast as they can think. It becomes hard to slow down and soak everything in. It becomes hard to embrace the present moment because we’re always living with this sense of prescience and worrying about what’s next. And with the rapid changes in technology like AI, everybody seems to be on the edge of their seats.
What happens when people get caught up in this cycle? They begin to go into autopilot mode. It is in this mode that the subconscious mind takes over and you begin to live your life in an unexplainable way, even to yourself. You kind of just go into this motion and go with the flow of the world around you.
But your life was never meant to be that way. In fact, God created you to do the exact opposite. There is a nature inside of you that is created and called to disrupt what the world deems normal. But how does one tap into this nature?
One sure way to do this is through the power of introspection. Introspection is a psychological term meaning, “to examine one’s own mental and emotional processes.” But it doesn't just stop there as introspection can involve accessing the overall state of your very soul (mind, will, and emotions).
Practicing introspection regularly heightens your self-awareness, which allows you to navigate life on your own terms instead of falling in line with what the world expects of you.
The catch in practicing this is that it requires you to slow down, even if the world around you is moving a thousand miles per hour. You must be disciplined enough to slow yourself down so that the world around you will begin to move at your pace.
One way to do this is by journaling. Journaling is a practice that forces you to slow down and write out your thoughts. It is a good way to clear your head, but to also examine what’s going on inside of you. For example, an awesome journal prompt to use for introspection is, “What would you do with your life if money was not something you had to worry about?”
Responding to this prompt forces you to sit with yourself and really examine if you are operating within the space God has created to operate in and could potentially lead to discovering your purpose. And with this newfound knowledge, you can make the necessary adjustments to your life accordingly.
